Vadodara: A woman employee of a private bank was arrested for her alleged role in a cyber-fraud case in Vadodara. According to the cybercrime investigators, the woman had accepted money from cyber criminals to open bank accounts used in the scam.
The investigation into the alleged racket led to the arrest of Khusbhu Mishra, an employee of a private bank.
B N Patel, the police inspector at the
Cyber Crime police station, said, "During the interrogation of two previously arrested accused, it came to light that Mishra had helped them in opening the bank accounts without any verification."
The police said Mishra was paid Rs 20,000 to open the bank accounts. The accused duo further told police that they were engaged in multiple businesses. Within a few days of opening the current accounts, transactions amounting to crores of rupees were conducted through them.
A police official said, "Many times bank employees open accounts of customers without verifying their identity and address and it helps the cyber frauds in siphoning money easily. Even the senior bank officials are responsible as they have to verify the background of those opening accounts in their bank." The investigators are currently working to determine if Mishra had opened any additional bank accounts without proper verification.
The cybercrime sleuths had registered an offence a few months ago after cyber criminals duped a man using a stock market investment app. The complainant was encouraged to invest money in the stock market through the app, resulting in an investment of Rs 10.67 lakh. However, when he attempted to withdraw the money, his efforts were unsuccessful, leading him to realize that he had been defrauded.
