Blueberries are one of the juiciest, and best fruits in the market. But, they are also pretty expensive here in India and so not a lot of people have access to them. So, here we mention how you can grow Blueberries at home, in the garden.

First thing to decide before planting a Blueberry is if you will use seeds straight from the blueberry fruit, or will you buy a root ball from your nearest nursery and then go ahead.

A not so easy, but more fulfilling way is to do it with a fruit. Buy a few blueberries from the market or order online, and cut them in half horizontally. Then with a tweezer pick out the seeds, as many as possible, and keep them in a tissue.

Once in the tissue, dry them well and then transfer them to another tissue, and gently mist it with water. Place the tissue inside a container, preferably in a humid environment.

After 15-25 days, you will see root and shoot coming out of the seeds. Once the germination begins, transfer the seeds to a pot, mist it well, and then cover the pot with a plastic bag, or cover, to maintain humidity.

The blueberry plant requires acidic soil to grow well. Make sure the soil PH is between 4.5 and 5.5, and make sure to add peat moss in it to lower the PH.

Even though the pot is covered to maintain humidity, it is still important to keep it in bright sunlight. For the leaves to grow more and the roots to enlarge, Blueberry plants need to be in direct sunlight for at least 4 hours every day.

Once the leaves of the plant are visible, and the plant has grown in height, remove the cover from the pot and let it receive sunlight directly. Till the leaves and stem are delicate, make sure to only mist or spray water, not pour directly over.

As the Blueberry plant starts rather thin and weak, it is best to mulch around the base as much as possible so that insects don't make their way inside and cause root rot.

It takes about 90 days for the leaves to start growing well, and about 6 months for the plant to start getting bushy. After that, regular pruning will help in fruit growth.

The final stage is when you can see Blueberries in the garden, and this will come in about a year or two. The fruit can be harvested once all the stems start growing well, and fertilisation can be done after the first harvest.
