Pune: Parts of
Maharashtra experienced heavy rainfall in the 24 hours ending Monday morning, with
IMD forecasting more intense showers in the coming days.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) data showed significant rainfall across some locations in the state during the period. In Madhya Maharashtra, Kasabedigraj in Sangli district received 80 mm of rain, while Karad in Satara and Gaganbawada in Kolhapur logged 70 mm.
Marathwada also saw heavy rain, with Georai in Beed receiving 80 mm of rainfall.
IMD has issued alerts for several regions in the state. Konkan and Goa region is expected to get isolated extremely heavy rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday. The region is also likely to experience isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on Thursday. Madhya Maharashtra has a similar forecast — isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall from Tuesday to Thursday.
Pune district registered some rainfall from 8:30 am till 5:30 pm on Monday, and more showers thereafter. During the nine hours on Monday, Bhor received the highest rainfall at 23 mm, followed by Talegaon at 12 mm and Daund at 11.5 mm. Other areas in Pune saw light precipitation. Among those areas were Lavale (8 mm), Hadapsar (7.5 mm), and Pashan (5.1 mm).
SD Sanap, a scientist at IMD, said under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over central Bay of Bengal, a low-pressure area was likely to form over west-central Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood by Tuesday.
"Pune city could also get moderate to heavy rainfall on Sept Wednesday and Thursday, followed by moderate rain. We expect moderate rainfall for the city even on Tuesday. There is significant moisture incursion in most of Maharashtra," he said.
IMD on Monday issued detailed forecasts for several districts in Maharashtra. Jalgaon is expected to face thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at isolated places till Thursday, with conditions easing to light rain or thundershowers by Friday. Nashik has a similar outlook, with the addition of heavy to very heavy rainfall predicted for Friday and an orange alert for those days.
Ahmednagar district is likely to get heavy to very heavy rainfall on Wednesday, along with thunderstorms and gusty winds throughout the forecast period. Pune's forecast indicated heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday, affecting both ghat areas and plains.
Kolhapur's weather is expected to be particularly severe on Tuesday, with heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, before moderating for the rest of the week. Satara has a similar forecast with heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday, followed by varying intensities of rain and thunderstorms in subsequent days.
