MUMBAI: Maharashtra Lokayukta on Monday took suo motu notice of a TOI report of Sept 22, regarding the lack of basic amenities at Mumbai's landmark Oval Maidan, and directed the state govt and the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai to take immediate steps to establish adequate toilet facilities for women cricketers there and at other similar venues statewide.
A comprehensive audit of all sports facilities used by women cricketers must be conducted to identify and rectify infrastructural deficiencies, said the Lokayukta Justice (retired) V M Kanade in his order.
"It is disheartening to note that no toilet facilities are available for girls at Oval, Azad Maidan, and other prominent playgrounds," the order said while issuing notice to the Municipal Commissioner, BMC, and the Principal Secretary, Urban Development Department. Both have to file their reports within two weeks, said Justice (retd) Kanade's order.
The lack of facilities "is not merely a logistical oversight; it is emblematic of a broader societal disregard for women's sports and their needs. The absence of basic facilities points to systemic neglect and raises serious questions about our commitment to gender equality in sports," the order added.
"In recent times, women's cricket has gained unprecedented popularity in India," observed the Lokayukta, adding how the "remarkable performances of our women cricketers on the international stage have not only brought glory to our nation but have also inspired countless young girls to take up the sport." The order noted that while their achievements are lauded, it was "imperative to address the infrastructural challenges they face, particularly…basic amenities."
The order also noted that the TOI report titled, ‘Locals recount Oval Maidan's 25-year journey from ‘scrubland' to heritage site' mentioned how a cricket academy at the Oval Maidan ‘Lacks Women Facilities'. The report mentions, ‘The Oval is the only cricket hotspot where women don't come to play". Observing that true potential would grow when nurtured, the Lokayukta, invoking the right to life and the Right to Education Act, included supporting infrastructure and facilities that cater to all students' physical needs.
The matter is kept next on Oct 17, when the civic chief or his representative and the principal secretary are to depute a high-ranking officer to be present to answer the suo motu complaint as directed by the Lokayukta.
