Several states in NE reel under heavy rain, IMD predicts more showers today
Guwahati: Several states in the northeast, including Tripura, Meghalaya and Assam, have been experiencing heavy rainfall since Monday due to a low-pressure area that formed in south Bangladesh. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned about the possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in isolated locations across Nagaland, Manipur, Assam, Meghalaya, and Mizoram on Wednesday.

This rainfall has already caused substantial precipitation in various parts of the region.
The continuous rainfall, which began on Monday morning, has led to significant accumulations. Tripura recorded the highest rainfall at 166.4 mm in the last 24 hours, compared to the normal expectation of 12 mm during the period from 8:30 am on Monday to 8:30 am on Tuesday. Meghalaya received 72.1 mm of rainfall, while Mizoram recorded 35.1 mm. Manipur and Assam experienced 20.7 mm and 16 mm of rainfall, respectively.

Tripura's rainfall was particularly striking, with a departure of over 1200% above normal levels. Meghalaya, Manipur, and Mizoram also saw significant increases above their normal rainfall levels, at 291%, 281 percent and 115%, respectively. Assam experienced a 55% increase above normal levels in the last 24 hours.
The highest rainfall in the last 24 hours was recorded in Bagafa, Tripura, at 38 cm, closely followed by Sohra (Cherrapunji) in Meghalaya at 35 cm. Cherrapunji is well-known as one of the rainiest places on Earth. More than a dozen weather stations across Tripura, Meghalaya, and Assam have reported heavy to very heavy rainfall.
