Tirupur: Five people were held with 436.5kg of banned tobacco products by the city police in two separate incidents on Saturday.
In one of the incidents, a special team attached to the Tirupur city police nabbed a three-member gang while smuggling 426kg of gutka into the district from Bengaluru.
A police officer said the special police team, along with the food safety officials, had conducted a vehicle check at Marakkadai bus stop based a specific tip about the smuggling of banned tobacco products from Bengaluru.
“They stopped an auto with three people and found 426kg of gutka in it. The trio - R Murugan, 38, of Ganapathipalayam in Tirupur, C Ilaiyaraja, 32, of VS Nagar at Maniyakarampalayam in Tirupur city and P Sathishbabu, 39, of College Road in Tirupur city – were subsequently arrested.”
The officer said they had formed a special team to nab Dhileep, a supplier of gukta.
In another incident, The Anupparpalayam police in Tirupur city and food safety officials seized 10.5kg of gutka from a godown at Vavipalayam based on a tip and arrested V Ridmal Ram, 32, and T Mohan Lal, 31, both natives of Rajasthan. They also seized a car and Rs90,000 from the duo, who were later remanded in judicial custody.
