The 30-seat assembly is scheduled to go to polls in a single-phase starting from April 6, 2021.
The Union territory is currently under President’s rule and the assembly has been kept under suspended animation after the V Narayanasamy-led Congress government resigned in February ahead of a trust vote. In 2016, Congress won the election with 15 seats defeating the All India NR Congress (AINRC) which could bag only eight seats. For AINRC it was a massive defeat as it had won 15 seats in the 2011 assembly elections. In the 2016 elections, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) won two seats while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) won four. The UT presents BJP as its best chance of governing in the south, where it has not moved beyond Kamataka. It's allied with AINRC leader and former CM N Rangaswamy, who is seen as a politician with simple habits. AIADMK is the third partner and the alliance is bolstered by resignations from Congress and DMK bringing down the V Narayanasamy government just ahead of the polls. Congress and DMK faced a tough task as the allies were not able to hold onto their flock. With Congress on a sticky wicket, the opposition is banking on the local credentials of the Electorate: Rangaswamy to win. After Bihar, West Bengal, along with Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry, would be holding elections under the shadow of the coronavirus pandemic. The Election Commission of India has released a series of Covid guidelines for the poll process. Door-to-door campaigning has been restricted to five people. The roadshows too have been restricted to a maximum of five vehicles. All the election officials will be vaccinated beforehand. The timing of the voting has been extended by an hour to accommodate the delay caused by Covid-19 guidelines. Puducherry Election Schedule 2021
