64-year-old rapes his five-year-old niece in Surat

SURAT: Kapodra police have arrested a 64-year-old man for allegedly raping his five-year-old niece. The horrendous crime is alleged to have been perpetrated on the afternoon of Sep 13, when the accused exploited the child's vulnerability while she was alone. The accused has been charged with rape under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.
According to police, the accused is the brother of the victim's father. On the day of the offence, the victim's mother had travelled to her native place in Uttar Pradesh. When the victim's father was having a bath, the accused lured the girl into his room on the pretext of playing with her. He then proceeded to sexually assault her, resulting in severe injuries to her private parts.
The victim complained to her father about the pain, but he failed to comprehend the gravity of the situation. It was only when her mother returned on Sep 16 that the victim confided in her about the ordeal. On taking her to the doctor, it was discovered that the child had been injured and was bleeding.
Kapodra police apprehended the accused near Udhna police station on Wednesday night, just before he could flee Surat.
