Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has launched a financial assistance scheme under its social development department to cover the cost of cochlear implant surgeries for hearing-impaired children.
NMC will bear up to ₹6 lakh per surgery for children aged 0 to 6 years to help them develop auditory abilities. Municipal commissioner and administrator Abhijeet Chaudhari has called on more citizens to take advantage of the scheme.
In addition, NMC plans to conduct a comprehensive survey this year to identify differently-abled individuals across Nagpur.
The survey will collect detailed information on various disabilities, with the aim of designing new initiatives to make these individuals self-reliant, based on their natural skills and interests.
Under the guidance of the civic chief, several schemes for the differently-abled are already in place. Deputy commissioner Ranjana Lade highlighted that hearing impairment severely impacts speech and language development, posing significant challenges in education, social integration, and emotional well-being. Early intervention through cochlear implant surgery, combined with speech and hearing therapy, can significantly improve a child’s ability to hear and communicate like other children.
However, the high cost of surgery, estimated at ₹6 lakh per patient, along with recurring expenses for medications, therapy, and tests, often leaves many families unable to afford the procedure. To ensure more families can benefit, Chaudhari urged eligible individuals to apply for assistance online via the NMC’s official website, www.nmcnagpur.gov.in.
