Kanyakumari: A history-sheeter was shot in his leg by police after he attacked a sub-inspector with a billhook when his team tried to apprehend him in connection with an extortion case in Kanyakumari district on Monday.
Anjugramam police booked R Selvamurugan, 38, of Karumpattur, for extorting 2,000 from a person at knifepoint near a soap company in Punnarkulam around 11pm on Sunday.

The next day, police learnt that Selvamurugan was hiding near Therur and a team led by Suchindram police inspector Atham Ali and Anjugramam police sub-inspector Palraj was deployed to arrest him.
Noticing police, Selvam, in a bid to escape, attacked Palraj with a billhook. Police said despite inspector Atham Ali firing a warning shot in the air, Selvam continued attacking Palraj. Subsequently, the inspector shot Selvam in his right leg.
Both SI Palraj and Selvam were immediately taken to Kanyakumari Govt Medical College Hospital. Doctors said their condition is stable.
Police said Selvam is an A+ category history sheeter and was booked in 28 criminal cases, including six murder cases and seven attempted murder cases, across several districts, including Tirunelveli and Tuticorin.TNN
