Kanpur: Police on Wednesday sought permission from a court in Kannauj for the DNA test of former block pramukh accused of raping a 15-yearoldgirl.
The accused, Nawab Singh Yadav, was arrested and sent to jail on Aug 12. The court heard his bail plea via video conferencing on Wednesday and fixed Aug 16 for the next hearing.
Meanwhile, the police could not present the case diary on Wednesday and sought time extension, a lawyer said.
The case was initially being dealt by the police as an incident of
rape attempt but the charges of rape were added to it on Tuesday evening, citing results of medical examination of the 15-year-old girl.
In her statement before the magistrate, the girl had stated that she was rapeed by Yadav. Based on this statement, the section pertaining to rape has been appended to the case registered against the accused.
“The medical examination of the girl in the Kannauj case has revealed that she was raped,” said Kannauj SP Amit Kumar Anand. “We have now sought permission for conducting DNA test on the accused,” he said.
The girl’s aunt, who took the girl for a meeting with Nawab Singh Yadav in Kannauj on Aug 11, was summoned to record her statement but failed to appear before the police on Tuesday. A case will also be registered against the woman. Six police teams have been formed to trace the girl’s aunt.
Yadav’s arrest has triggered a war of words between the BJP and SP. BJP claimed the accused was an SP neta and close to SP’s first family, but Kannauj district SP chief said that he was no longer associated with the party.
