Ghaziabad: A 30-year-old man was caught on camera entering the house of his neighbour — away on a
holiday in Nainital — and stealing Rs 5 lakh worth of jewellery at Charms Castle society in Raj Nagar Extension.
Rahul Kapri, a sales manager at a private company, said the theft was live streamed on his mobile phone while he was at Nainital with his family, and he immediately alerted the security staff of the society and subsequently the cops.
The suspect, Ayush Vohra, was arrested on Monday. Police said the two men lived on the same floor in tower F — Vohra lives in flat 1004 and Kapri in 1007 — just across the corridor.
“Around 5 am on Monday, Vohra entered Kapri’s flat. It seems he was unaware Kapri had installed a CCTV camera inside the house, which sent an alert to his phone. Kapri could see Vohra break into his flat and walk around. In his complaint, Kapri said he immediately alerted the society’s maintenance and security staff and the police. He returned to Ghaziabad on Monday afternoon and submitted a complaint,” ACP Nandgram Ravi Kumar said. This was the second time that Vohra had sneaked into Kapri’s flat within a month, the ACP said. Ayush told police that he worked at a call centre in Noida but lost the job a few days ago. After that, he needed some money, so he stole from here and there, the officer said.
“Ayush claimed that about a month back his neighbour had left the key to the main door hanging on the door’s lock. He took a soap impression to make a duplicate key. He used it to steal Rs 15,000 from Kapri’s house about a month back. The Kapri family installed a CCTV camera soon after,” the ACP said.
Kapri said even as his family was leaving for Nainital on Sunday, they met Vohra in the lift.
The accused has been booked under IPC sections 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) and 380 (punishment for theft). He has been sent to judicial custody.
