Erode: Water discharge from Bhavanisagar dam into the Lower Bhavani canal (LBC) was halted on Tuesday after a leakage was spotted in a rainwater drainage channel, which runs diagonally at the bottom of the canal. The leak was noticed at the 47th mile of the Lower Bhavani Canal at Pethampalayam village near Perundurai here.
WRD officials inspected the spot and have begun work to fix the leakage.
An official from the inspection site told TOI, “We stopped releasing water into the Lower Bhavani canal this morning, to prevent the risk of the canal breaking due to the leakage. We are working round the clock to fix the issue.” He also expressed hope that the work would be completed in a couple of days.
On August 15, water was released from the Bhavanisagar Dam into canals, to irrigate 1.35 lakh acres across Erode, Tirupur, and Karur districts, over 120 days. Initially, water was released at the rate of 200 cubic feet per second (cusecs). It was meant to be gradually increased to 2,300 cusecs based on irrigation needs.
