Three-year-old girl raped, accused caught red-handed

Coimbatore: A 59-year-old man was arrested on Monday for raping a three-year-old girl at New Siddhapudur in the city on Sunday.
The central all women police in the city identified the accused as P Sundaram, of Perumal Kovil Street in Ukkadam. He was engaged in ironing clothes in a pushcart, in Ukkadam and surrounding areas. Police said Sundaram used to frequently go to New Siddhapudur, to visit his married daughter and his younger sister.During his visits, he befriended the owner of an autorickshaw workshop in the locality. The family were residing near the workshop. Sundaram used to be friendly with them, and often played with their three-year-old girl.
When visiting the workshop on Sunday, Sundaram, took the girl into an autorickshaw and raped her. Two people who visited the workshop heard the girl crying and rescued her from the accused. The duo thrashed him before handing him over to police.
Police registered a case against Sundaram under sections 5 (m) read with 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and formally arrested him on Monday.
He was produced before the special court for the Pocso Act cases and remanded in judicial custody. He was subsequently lodged at the Coimbatore central prison.
