Bhopal: State
Congress on Thursday received another major blow, as its two sitting corporators from Satna switched to the
BJP.
The Congress was planning to bring a no-confidence motion in the Satna Municipal Corporation on Friday. A letter was also issued to this effect, and the district collector of Satna had called nine corporators from each party.
But on Thursday morning, Satna mayor Yogesh Tamrakar reached the state BJP headquarters with two sitting Congress corporators, Maya Kaul and Archana Gupta.
Two former Congress corporators, Anil Gupta and KL Yadav, also joined them. All four took membership of the BJP from the party's state president, VD Sharma.
Speaking to reporters, VD Sharma said, "Some people in Satna were trying to spoil the atmosphere by instigating contentious politics. Today, they got the answer with two Congress councillors joining our party."
The BJP had 26 corporators in the Satna Municipal Corporation, while the Congress had 17. Now, after the switch-over by two corporators, the Congress' number has reduced to 15.
"There were 26 corporators of the BJP and 17 of the Congress, and yet they wanted to bring a no-confidence motion," Tamrakar said. "In the last two years, there has been more development than in the last two decades. Still, they wanted a no-confidence motion, which was ridiculous. Three months ago, three Congress corporators had already switched to the BJP here in the presence of chief minister Mohan Yadav and state president VD Sharma," he said.
Corporator Gupta said that the BJP mayor was working without discriminating between parties. "He is doing good work, and we have no complaints against him," she said.
Three-time corporator Kaul said, "Where is the Congress party? We have to get work done, and that is possible if you are in the BJP. This transfer from Congress to the BJP was required."
