VISAKHAPATNAM: The East Coast Railways (ECoR) has achieved an impressive feat in freight transportation by unloading over 100 million tons of goods in a mere 160 days during the current financial year. As of 7th September 2024, ECoR successfully unloaded 100.44 million tons, surpassing the previous year's figure for the same period by 6.15 million tons, representing a 6.5% growth.
The achievement was a collective effort from various divisions within ECoR. Khurda Road Division unloaded 60.38 million tons, while Waltair Division and Sambalpur Division contributed 22.68 million tons and 17.38 million tons, respectively.
ECoR has played a crucial role in supporting the logistical requirements of important industries and ports within its jurisdiction. The railway caters to major ports such as Paradeep, Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Gangavaram, Gopalpur & Dhamra. It serves the transportation needs of vital industries, including steel, power, aluminium, fertilizers, cement, and other sectors. The primary commodities transported by ECoR include coal, iron ore, alumina, manganese, and bauxite.
The accomplishment of unloading 100 million tons in just 160 days highlights the railway's enhanced efficiency and dedication to fulfilling industrial demands. In comparison, this milestone was achieved in 171 days in the previous financial year (2023-24) and 191 days during 2022-23, demonstrating ECoR's consistent improvement in performance.
