Aam Aadmi Party
The ruling party seeks a second term under the leadership of chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. AAP has given tickets to 46 of its sitting MLAs besides introducing 15 new faces to the fray.
The major omissions include party's chief whip in the assembly Jagdeep Singh (Hari Nagar), Surender 'Commando (Delhi Cantt) and Haji Ishraq Khan (Seelampur). Shoaib Iqbal, who joined the AAP recently, has replaced sitting MLA Asim Ahmed Khan.
Formed in 2012, AAP formed the government in Delhi in 2013, which lasted for 45 days. In the next election in 2015, AAP won with a massive mandate of 67 seats pushing BJP to three seats and wiping out Congress from Delhi assembly.
Raghav Chadha
Raghav Chadha is pitted against BJP’s Sikh face RP Singh, who had won the 2013 assembly election but lost in 2015. AAP has replaced its sitting MLA and brought in Chadha, who unsuccessfully contested the 2109 Lok Sabha election from South Delhi. Congress has fielded former DUSU president Rocky Tuseed.
Atishi
Oxford-educated Atishi, who is among the AAP's prominent faces and had lost to Gautam Gambhir in East Delhi Lok Sabha seat, will be contesting from Kalkaji while Chadha has been fielded from Rajendra Nagar and Pandey from Timarpur.
Elections 2020: AAP campaigns for Delhi Assembly
AAP pitches itself as a 'local' choice and hopes the recent trend of regional parties doing well in state polls works for it. Congress's lack of a popular face post Sheila Dikshit has helped AAP position itself as an anti-BJP force.
Delhi CM Kejriwal tweeted in January that this time election in Delhi will be fought on the work done by the government. He also urged the voters to consider the differences in state and general elections while voting, saying that if people can be BJP or Congress supporters and still vote for broom in Delhi assembly.
AAP’s strength lies in a strong chief minister face in Kejriwal who might lose some of the middle-class support but his pro-poor schemes is likely to benefit the party. A bottleneck in AAP’s selling pitch is its poor performance in 2019 Lok Sabha elections in which it ranked third behind BJP and Congress.
