Vadodara: Crawling into a freshly made bed after a long day is one of life's simple pleasures. However, for many people, lifting a mattress and tucking it tightly to create a perfect bed can be challenging.
Tucking bedsheets, linens, and furnishings of beds, sofas, couches, and recliners poses a major challenge for housekeeping personnel in the hospitality sector and in every household.
Innovators from MS University's Department of Family and Community Resource Management have developed specialized tools, including a detachable mattress lifter and tucking tool, that are custom-made to ensure safety, ease, comfort, and convenience while tucking bedsheets and furnishings.
These lightweight tools have been granted a patent under the Designs Act, 2000, and the Designs Rules, 2001, from the Patent Office of the Government of India.
Dr. Sarjoo Patel, the in charge head and assistant professor at the department, explained, "Bed-making is a day-to-day task. For tucking bedsheets and linens in a sofa, an individual has to bend in awkward positions. Sometimes, it also causes injuries to fingers or wrists and causes stress on the back and neck due to awkward postures." Patel and her team, consisting of Dr Smita Chandra, Dr Vashima Veerkumar, and Dr Khyati Trivedi, all temporary assistant professors, have designed the detachable mattress lifter and
bed tucking tool to ease the workload of the housekeeping department.
The product is made with Indian pinewood, which is lightweight and sturdy, ensuring its longevity. It also has an additional attachment to aid in tucking linen for various furniture edges, such as the headrest of the bed, sofa linen, and liners for couches.
The department, which is part of the Faculty of Family and Community Sciences, offers a specialization in hospitality management that provides hands-on training in housekeeping for commercial spaces. Patel believes that these tools will be very beneficial for the commercial sector and households.
Although the cost of a single piece was Rs 2,000 due to it being specially designed for their research, Chandran noted that the cost of these tools will be much lower with bulk orders.
The tools will be especially beneficial for those who experience back and neck pain while carrying out this day-to-day task in their households, as the otherwise heavy mattresses and sofas can be lifted using these tools.
