Trichy: Trichy corporation has sanctioned 8 crore to take up 23 road works in 14 wards in four zones in the city. The roads were damaged for the installation of underground drainage (UGD) pipelines and renovation of the drinking water supply network.
The corporation is utilising the Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Fund (TURIF 2024-25) for the road work.
Areas like Rockfort, Woraiyur, Varaganeri, KK Nagar, K Sathanur, Kattur, Karumandapam, Crawford, and Fort station are to be covered under the project.
“While we appreciate the new road works planned, officials must ensure that the roads once relaid will not be disturbed again for fresh repair works. Already, we have endured difficulty for months, so, the new roads should be a permanent solution,” G Venkatesan, a resident of Varaganeri said.
Expressing fear over the increase in heights of the new roads, especially in Rockfort, Woraiyur and Varaganeri, locals urged the civic body to ensure that the contractors mill the old surface. Some of the roads sanctioned in the phase include concrete roads on Allimal street, Sundardas Kula street, and Small Chowk. “Road work will be completed before the onset of the monsoon. A tender has been floated to execute 23 road relaying works,” an official source said.
Local body sources added that few more road works will be sanctioned, and tenders will be floated in the next phase to cover at least 12km long stretch of roads in the city.
Out of the 755km long roads in the city selected for the UGD projects in phase II, phase III, and smart cities mission (renovation), corporation has completed installing pipelines in about 738km stretch. Subsequently, around 674km long roads were relaid. Corporation sources said that funds are being gradually obtained to relay the roads before the onset of northeast monsoon in Nov.
