BSF thwarts cattle, sugar smuggling bid
Shillong: The Border Security Force (BSF), responsible for guarding the 443-km international border between Meghalaya and Bangladesh, has been preventing the smuggling of cattle and other goods into the neighbouring country. In recent incidents, the BSF successfully intercepted attempts to smuggle cattle and sugar across the border.
According to a statement released by BSF’s Meghalaya Frontier Headquarters, “On Sept 13, 2024, vigilant troops of BSF Meghalaya successfully thwarted cattle smuggling attempt by rescuing 64 cattle from the International border of Meghalaya.

The cattle were being smuggled to Bangladesh through the bordering area of West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya.”
In a separate incident, BSF troops intercepted 12,000 kg of sugar loaded in three vehicles, which was also meant to be smuggled into Bangladesh through the international border of East Khasi Hills.

This rare ceasefire violation occurs just days ahead of the first phase of assembly elections scheduled for September 18.
