Namakkal: A thatched-roof house set up on the terrace of a house at Tiruchengodu here was completely gutted in a fire on Tuesday. No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident. However, household goods worth 3 lakh were destroyed in the fire.
Police said the incident took place at a house belonging to K Selvaraj, 45, of Rajalingampettai in Tiruchengodu.
While Selvaraj’s parents were staying in the ground floor, he and his wife Rani, 39, had set up a thatched-roof house for themselves on the terrace.
Around 11am on Tuesday, thick smoke was seen emanating from inside the thatched house. Within a few minutes, an LPG cylinder in the house blasted and the thatched house collapsed. Neighbours alerted the fire and rescue services personnel and informed Selvaraj of the incident.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that a short circuit led to the fire. M Gunasekaran, fire station officer, Tiruchengodu said, “The LPG cylinder blasted because of the fire.”
