Namakkal: A woman who was nine months pregnant was killed and four of her family members were injured after the omni van they were travelling in crashed into a stationary earthmover on the roadside near Senthamangalam here on Wednesday evening.
According to the Senthamangalam police, the incident took place when the woman’s parents were taking her to their house at Vettampady in Namakkal after a baby shower function at her husband’s house at Kondayampalli in Salem.
A police officer identified the deceased as S Pavithra, 27, wife of Selvakumar, 29, of Kondayampalli near Thammampatty in Salem district. At the time of the incident, he said, Selvakumar, Pavithra’s parents Baluchamy, 50, and Chithra, 45, and their relative Rajeswari, 49, were travelling with her in the omni van.
“Baluchamy was at the wheel of the vehicle. When they neared Thirumalaipatty area, he lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a bend and the omni van crashed into the earthmover parked on the roadside. Pavithra succumbed to her injuries on the spot, while the rest escaped with injuries,” the officer said.
When alerted, the Senthamangalam police rushed the injured to the Namakkal government medical college and hospital. Their condition is said to be stable. The body was also sent to the same hospital for a postmortem.
The Senthamangalam police have registered a case and further inquiry is on. The video of the incident has, meanwhile, gone viral on social media.
