Gaya: Falgu river in Gaya, with its sand-laden riverbed, is providing an easy cover for the liquor mafia to hide and retrieve their contraband. The river’s shallow waters and vast expanse of sand, have made it an ideal spot for bootleggers to dig and conceal their goods.
With liquor banned in Bihar, the mafia has been exploiting the river’s sand to evade police.
On Tuesday, police on Tuesday recovered huge quantity of liquor from Falgu river near Koshila vilage under Magadh University police station area and arrested a man suspected to be involved in illegal sale of liquor.
The policemen after digging about a feet in the river bed discovered two sacks containing liquor bottles.
SSP Ashish Bharti said, “Following a tip off, a special search operation was conducted on Tuesday under the ongoing drive against liquor trade. During the raid conducted by Magadh University police, around 35 litres of foreign liquor from the river bed.”
Koshila is about 20 km away from Bihar-Jharkhand border area.
According to information, the police team had laid a trap to catch the smugglers. But sensing presence of police, the smugglers hid the liquor in the riverbed and escaped. On getting information, police team conducted a search and recovered the dumped liquor bottles.
Earlier, police had recovered liquor from Falgu river near Manpur.
Meanwhile, another person Kameshwar Mandal of village Kodhwra was arrested during raid by Bahera police station cops in a liquor related matter.
