Nagpur: In a major action against cattle and beef smugglers, Yashodhara Nagar police intercepted a truck ferrying 15,000kg beef to Hyderabad in the early hours of Tuesday. Police have seized the beef, a truck and arrested two persons.
The arrested men have been identified as Sayed Harun (38) and Samr Khan (37). Two others, Jiya Qureshi and truck owner Rizwan Hazi, are missing.
The Yashodhara Nagar police had received a tip-off that a truck loaded with beef was going from Kamptee to Hyderabad.
The police laid a trap in Nagpur city and stopped the truck near Automotive Square on Kamptee Road. On checking, they discovered beef. The truck driver and cleaner were arrested, who gave away information about the other accused.
Senior inspector Ramesh Khule said Harun and Khan had collected the beef from Qureshi and Hazi. "The meat was fresh. The accused were ferrying it to Hyderabad where the demand is high. The accused have a past record of smuggling cattle and beef," said Khule.
