MEERUT: In a unique bid to increase green cover, Chaudhary Charan Singh University (CCSU) in Meerut has announced that students applying for hostel accommodation must upload a selfie of themselves planting saplings on the varsity website to complete the registration process.
Vice-chancellor Sangeeta Shukla said,"To increase the green cover, the university administration has decided that a student applying for hostel must plant a sapling before submitting the registration form."
"Every year, around 4,000 students apply for hostel facilities at CCSU for nearly 1,800 seats.
This initiative will result in planting of approximately 4,000 saplings, creating a sustainable green cover," she added.
Chief warden professor Dinesh Kumar said, "The university has eight hostels with 935 rooms, accommodating two students per room. Students who plant saplings will be responsible for its care, with support from university's resources. Initially, we had planned to collect registration fees from hostel aspirants, but decided on the requirement to plant saplings."
A university official said, "Over 2 lakh students enroll for various courses across our campuses and affiliated colleges. We are considering making this rule mandatory for all admissions. The aim is to significantly increase green cover."
