At that time, the students submitted a letter to the rector, but no action was taken. Later, on Sept 4 and 5, worms were found in rice and chapati. The students again followed the same process and got similar result. On Sept 23, worms again found in the dal served at the mess during lunch. This is when the students decided to take an aggressive stance. The students also alleged that the hostel rector and administration have not taken any notice of the earlier complaints.
Vedant Kulkarni, Mahanagar Sahamantri (Joint Minister) of the ABVP, said, "We have given a letter to Shirke regarding the worms. The students had repeatedly brought it to the notice of the mess contractor, but there was no change found. Two students have suffered from food poisoning and vomiting due to this. Health of over 200 students residing in the hostel is in danger now. Immediate action needs to be taken against the culprits. If there is no improvement in the food quality, then we will resort to protest."
SUK registrar Dr VN Shinde said, "All five messes on the campus are run by and for students. We have received the complaint and are taking it seriously as it has occurred on the university campus. An inquiry has been ordered."
