Kolhapur: As many as 46 mobile handsets have been recovered from the Kalamba Jail premises since May this year.
Just prior to this, three months ago, two officials and 12 staffers responsible for maintaining jail security had been suspended for negligence of duty. Following this, officials had claimed security has been enhanced and smuggling of prohibited items into jail is no longer as easy.
However, the discovery of mobile handsets has revealed a different story. Several prohibited items continue to be smuggled into the prison. Elaborate searches have led to items such as SIM cards and four mobile batteries being recovered, too.
Prison officer Avinash Jaisingh Bhoi (42) has registered a complaint with the Juna Rajwada police station for investigation in the matter.
According to a senior prison officer, the recovered mobile handsets were found in toilets, latrines, within walls, under piles of soil, etc. The police have started an investigation to find out how these phones made it into the prison premises and for whom.
