IMPHAL: A significant quantity of fuel has leaked from a power station in
Imphal West district of Manipur, leading to contamination of nearby streams, officials reported on Thursday. The incident occurred on Wednesday night at the Leimakhong power station, affecting streams that pass through villages like Kanto Sabal and Sekmai. These streams eventually join the Imphal river downstream, which is a crucial water source for the region, according to officials.
In response to the incident, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) has instructed the concerned departments to promptly address the situation and prevent any potential environmental disaster.
The CMO has urged the use of all available resources, including machinery, manpower, and expertise.
To mitigate the impact of the fuel spill, heavy machinery has been deployed to redirect the flow of water in the affected streams towards nearby fields, as informed by an official. The cause of the leak is yet to be determined, with authorities investigating whether it was accidental or caused by miscreants.
Local residents have expressed concern over the incident, as they rely on the water from these streams for their daily chores. Nongmai, a resident of Kanto Sabal, stated that the spill not only poses a threat to aquatic life but also endangers the communities dependent on the contaminated water.
The authorities are taking immediate action to contain the situation and prevent further damage to the environment and the well-being of the affected communities.
