Prisoner swallows blades, tries to kill self

Chennai: A prisoner, Zakir Hussain, who was arrested on charges of placing a pipe bomb in a culvert targeting former Union minister L K Advani in 2011, swallowed blades at the sub-jail in Poonamallee. Last Friday, Hussain had attempted suicide by consuming ant powder, but he was rescued by prison staff.
On Tuesday, he complained of stomach pain and was taken to the hospital, where he revealed that he had also swallowed some pieces of broken blades.Though he claimed to have swallowed the blades on Friday itself, the issue came to light only on Tuesday.
Police said Hussain got bail from Madras high court six months ago. But he was unable to provide the necessary documents or pay the bail fee. Frustrated at that, he took the extreme step. Prison officials are investigating to find out how he managed to get the blade. Hussain is stable now, police said.tnn
