Later, on Sept 12, three children aged between four years and 14 years died within a couple of hours. These children were from the same family and were siblings. However, though there is an outbreak in the locality, these children were not having diarrhoea-related symptoms. They had passed stool only once before death. On Friday morning, one child aged around 1 year, who was referred to the district hospital, also died during treatment. He was having symptoms of diarrhoea. Thus, of the five deaths, two had diarrhoea-related symptoms, and three are suspected deaths," Panna chief medical and health officer Dr SK Tripathi told TOI.
He added, "There is certainly a diarrhoea outbreak. Our teams are in the village, and around a dozen people are admitted to hospitals. The village has two hand pumps and a well. The well has been abandoned, and people were using hand-pumps. The PHE department has taken samples, and we have also sent stool samples for culture. Precautionary measures are being taken, besides the deployment of teams at the village."
