Ahmedabad: The Gujarat govt is contemplating the bifurcation of Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Kutch, Mehsana, and Banaskantha districts to establish at least four to five new districts.
Govt may proclaim Ahmedabad city as a separate district and Viramgam as a new district, carved out from the existing Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar districts.
A new district may be declared by merging parts of Kutch and Banaskantha.
Govt may consider dividing the geographically expansive Kutch into East and West Kutch.
Reports suggest that govt is deliberating on announcing Prime Minister's hometown, Vadnagar, as a new district, to be formed from Mehsana.
In 2013, during the current Prime Minister's tenure as the chief minister of Gujarat, seven new districts were declared. Govt may now reassess other large districts for division to facilitate better governance.
As the division of districts is a highly critical process, govt may announce its intention post-Diwali and formally implement the changes in the coming period.
In Feb, prior to the Lok Sabha elections, the Gujarat govt had announced the formation of five new municipal corporations and is considering the establishment of nearly half a dozen more, totalling almost a dozen new municipal corporations.
