Ahmedabad: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Monday arrested the assistant director of the Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) from his office near Income Tax Crossroads on Ashram Road for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 3 lakh from a businessman.
The accused, Kamalkant Meena, was charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act, ACB officials said.
According to the case details, a businessman received a notice from ESIC demanding an employee insurance deduction (ESI) amount of Rs 46.29 lakh.
The businessman approached Meena and furnished the required documents to resolve the matter. During this encounter, Meena initially demanded Rs 4 lakh to settle the issue, which was subsequently negotiated down to Rs 3 lakh. Meena assured him that the notice amount would be reduced to Rs 2 lakh.
Unwilling to pay the money, the businessman approached the ACB.
On Monday, the ACB laid a trap on the first floor of the ESIC office on Ashram Road in the city and nabbed Meena red-handed. Later in the evening, ACB officials searched Meena's house at Suryam Greens apartments in Vastral and recovered Rs 4.30 lakh cash and silver worth Rs 42,000.
