Man sentenced to death for 2017 double murder
Ahmedabad: A 40-year-old man was sentenced to death by a city session court on Tuesday for murdering a woman and her son in Odhav area of Ahmedabad on June 3, 2017, over his illicit affair with the wife of the deceased person.
Additional sessions judge B B Jadav found Baldev Chauhan guilty of murdering Kanchan Modi and her son Vipul Modi. The judge stated that Chauhan had committed an "inhuman act for his illicit relationship" and that "his heinous act could not be described in words".
The court deemed the crime to be the "rarest of the rare" and sentenced Chauhan to be hanged till death.

In its ruling, the court emphasised that while its purpose was not to intimidate, it has a sacred duty to impose the maximum punishment when necessary to keep offenders in check and uphold the rule of law. The court further stated that it should exercise its judicial power to award the maximum punishment to control those who engage in heinous and inhuman acts.
According to case details, Chauhan, who worked as a compounder at a local private hospital, had developed an illicit relationship with Vipul's wife.
When the woman's family came to know of the affair, she was sent back to her matrimonial home in Maharashtra on May 29, 2017.
Enraged by this, Chauhan went to Vipul's house on the evening of June 3, where he engaged in a violent altercation with Kanchan, ultimately killing her using an axe. As he was attempting to conceal her body and erase evidence of the crime, Kanchan's son Vipul reached home. Chauhan killed him too with the axe. He then wrapped their bodies in a plastic bag and fled the scene early the following morning.
The bodies were discovered three days after the incident. Chauhan was arrested by Odhav police on June 7, 2017. He faced charges of murder and destruction of evidence during the trial. The court found him guilty on both charges.
