Ahmedabad: A 71-year-old retired assistant sub-inspector (ASI) from Ahmedabad was kidnapped, beaten, and robbed of Rs 3 lakh worth of valuables after he went to meet a woman who had contacted him through a ‘wrong number call'. Police have detained the suspects.
The victim, Mukesh Makwana, who lives in Kavitha village in Bavla taluka, stated in his police complaint that he suffers from severe knee pain and leads a retired life.
The series of incidents began after Makwana received a missed call on Sep 17. When he called back, a woman answered, claiming to have dialed the number by mistake. Despite this, she insisted on talking to him. They even communicated through video calls.
A few days later, Makwana met the woman, who introduced herself as Sonal, near the Vasna AMTS bus stop. During their conversation, Sonal revealed that her husband was an alcoholic who frequently abused her. She then suggested a relationship with Makwana, but he did not respond to her proposal.
On Sunday (Sep 22) morning, Sonal called Makwana again, asking him to meet her near Vishala circle. Makwana reached the location on his motorcycle. Sonal then directed him to take her towards Narol, Pirana, Kamod village, and finally, they stopped near a hotel in Aslali.
As Makwana was about to stop near the hotel, three men in an autorickshaw intercepted him, forcing him to stop. The men pushed Makwana into the autorickshaw, while one of them took his motorcycle. Inside the autorickshaw, Makwana was beaten and robbed of valuables like cellphones and other documents. Sonal, who was also in the autorickshaw, snatched his gold chain.
The three men accused Makwana of having an illicit affair with Sonal and recorded a video of him confessing to the relationship. Makwana, who was assaulted with sticks, called for help, and some locals in Aslali spotted him and came to his aid. At this point, the three men and Sonal fled the scene.
Makwana informed his family about the incident and approached the police.
Aslali police registered a case against Sonal and the three men, charging them with kidnapping,
robbery, criminal intimidation, intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace, and criminal conspiracy.
Inspector N H Savseta of Aslali police said that all four accused have been detained, and further investigation is underway.
