Cop held for ‘threatening to kill neighbour to extort 1cr’

Agra: An UP Police constable was arrested for allegedly threatening to kidnap and kill a neighbour in a bid to extort Rs 1 crore in Maghera village under jurisdiction of Jaint police station of Mathura district.
Accused Ajit Gautam (38), a resident of the same village, was posted at Banda district jail. On August 5, Ajit threatened his neighbour Ram Kumar, a farmer, to pay him Rs 1 crore or he would kidnap and kill his son Anuj (21).

Gautam was carrying an illegal weapon and opened fire at Ram Kumar. However, Kumar managed to escape, the FIR mentioned. Jaint police station house officer Ashwini Kumar said, “The accused Ajit Gautam hatched the plan when he came to know Kumar had earned Rs 2 crore from a property deal.”
“An FIR was registered against constable Ajit Gautam under BNS section 308(5) (extortion by putting any person in fear of death or of grievous hurt) and 109 (attempt to murder). For processing an illegal weapon, a separate FIR under Arms Act was registered against him,” SHO said.
