AGRA: An 18-month-old girl was crushed by a car in the parking lot of a mall in Agra on Aug 6 as shown in CCTV footage released on Sunday. The girl’s family rushed her to a hospital, but she succumbed to injuries during treatment. The driver fled the spot.
Police said CCTV footage showed the girl’s parents were placing items in their car’s trunk when the child, who was playing, reached the ramp of the parking lot.
A car leaving the area ran over her.
Jaydeep Thakur, the girl’s father said he, his wife Shivani, their son Rishab(10), daughter Rudrika, and his father Udayveer Singh were at the mall. After the accident, they rushed to Lotus hospital where Rudrika was declared dead. The driver had already fled by then.
Udayveer Singh, the girl’s grandfather, said, “We took the body home, where neighbours and relatives gathered. On their advice, we performed the last rites. We were devastated and did not think to file a report immediately. However, realising that the driver needed to be held accountable, we reviewed CCTV footage at the mall and filed a report.”
Udayveer criticised the mall for charging Rs 100 parking fee, noting that the basement appears to be poorly constructed and lacks security personnel. The car involved did not have a parking token.
ACP Aditya Kumar said, “An FIR was registered based on the complaint under sections 281 (rash driving) and 106(1) (causing death by rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide). We are working to locate the driver using the car’s number.”
