Agra: A Special SC/ST court has sentenced three brothers to life imprisonment for a brutal attack on a Dalit man in Nagla Manjh village under Aunchha police station in Mainpuri district in 1992, concluding a protracted legal battle. Additional district govt counsel (ADGC) M P Singh Chauhan said the convicts were immediately taken into custody.
On Feb 19, 1992, villagers shot and injured Nanhu Singh and his son, Amar Singh.
Amar’s brother Rajbahadur lodged a complaint against Brajesh Pandit, Mukesh alias Bablu, Awdhesh, and Umesh alias Gullu, accusing them of the crime.
An FIR was registered under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), 506 (criminal intimidation), and section 3(2)(V) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
After thorough medical examinations of the victims, police prepared a charge sheet against the accused and submitted it to the court. During the trial, the prosecution presented testimonies from the plaintiff, investigators, medical personnel, the injured, and various witnesses, all of whom corroborated the accusations against the four brothers. The eldest brother, Brajesh, died in 2022, Chauhan said.
“Upon reviewing the evidence and witness statements, the court found Mukesh, Awdhesh, and Umesh guilty of the attack. Rejecting their pleas for mercy, the court sentenced the three convicts to life imprisonment under the SC/ST Act. The crime was an attempt to establish caste supremacy,”the ADGC added,
