Agra: BJP MLA from Agra Cantt GS Dharmesh has extended support to the call of
Bharat Bandh on Aug 21 against the Supreme Court order directing changes in the reservation system for SC/ST community. Dharmesh held a meeting with community representatives in support of the bandh.
The former minister said a meeting was held on Sunday at the Circuit House. “Any tampering with SC/ST reservations is not acceptable.
A delegation will soon meet PM Narendra Modi demanding that the decision be changed in the Parliament, just like the amendment made by the cabinet to the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act on April 2, 2018,” he said.
Ex-IAS officer Nekram Verma, who attended the meeting, said a child from the SC/ST community progresses through their own hard work and education, and reservation cannot be abolished by considering them in the creamy layer.
During the meeting, SC/ST Employees Union state president Govind Ram and SC/ST Teachers Association president Bhisham Pal also expressed disagreement with the decision.
On Thursday, Supreme Court ruled that states must identify ‘creamy layer’ in the SC/ST community and exclude them from quota benefits. The court also ruled by a majority judgment that sub-classification within the SC and STs reservation is permissible.
