Agra: A court in Agra sentenced six men, including five brothers, to life imprisonment for killing a 62-year-old man in 2020 over an old rivalry. Additional District Judge Amarjeet also imposed a fine of Rs 6.3 lakh on the convicts, said additional district government counsel (ADGC) Santosh Bhati.
The convicts -- Shiv Shankar, Diwan Singh, Dharmendra Singh, Dilip Singh and Amaresh Singh (all brothers), and aide Arjun Singh are residents of Bishara village in Kagaraul police station area in the district.
On July 2, 2020, Jeevan Singh (62) was attacked with sticks and rods near a village dharamshala. The assault left him with multiple severe injuries, leading to his death.
Despite the intervention of nearby villagers, the attackers fled the scene, issuing threats to kill anyone who intervened. Jeevan Singh was taken to SN Medical College in Agra, where he succumbed to injuries the following day, said officials.
“Following a complaint by Jeevan Singh’s son, Shyam Singh, a case was registered under IPC sections 302 (murder), 147 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly), and 506 (criminal intimidation). All six accused were arrested but managed to secure bail,” said the ADGC.
He added, “The court’s decision came after testimony of key witnesses and presentation of strong evidence by the prosecution. It rejected the convicts’ plea for leniency, sentencing them to life imprisonment.” The accused men, out on bail, were sent to jail following court orders, said the ADGC, adding the crime was committed following an old rivalry involving family of the victim and convicts.
