Apple has introduced several new features to make the iPhone 16 series significantly more repairable than previous models.
The most notable change is a new adhesive used for the battery in the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus models. This "ionic liquid battery adhesive" can be loosened by applying a low voltage current, such as from a 9-volt battery, making battery removal much easier and safer than before.
Apple has also made the TrueDepth Camera replaceable on iPhone 16 and 16 Pro models without compromising security or privacy. Previously, only Apple could perform this repair. Additionally, the LiDAR scanner on Pro models is now serviceable along with the rear camera module.
A new Repair Assistant feature in iOS 18 allows users and repair professionals to configure both new and used Apple parts directly on the device, eliminating the need to contact Apple for part activation. This addresses previous "parts pairing" issues that limited third-party repairs.
On-device diagnostics are now available starting with iOS 18, allowing users to determine which parts need replacement without requiring a second device. Apple has also expanded support for third-party and used parts, with the system attempting to activate non-Apple components to their full capability.
While these improvements apply primarily to the iPhone 16 series, some features like on-device TrueDepth Camera configuration will be available for iPhone 12 and later models.
