NEW DELHI: Dhiraj Bommadevara, a 22-year-old from Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, showcased his exceptional archery skills at the Paris Olympics 2024, securing the fourth position in the men's ranking round on Thursday.
His outstanding performance not only impressed everyone but also played a crucial role in guiding the Indian team to the quarterfinals. Dhiraj's final score of 681 points was complemented by his teammates, Tarundeep Rai and Pravin Jadhav, who finished 14th and 39th respectively.This achievement adds to Dhiraj's already impressive track record over the past few years.

Dhiraj's journey in archery began in 2006 at the Volga Archery Academy in Vijayawada, under the influence of his father, Bommadevara Shravan Kumar, who was a technical official of the Archery Association of India.

In 2021, Dhiraj joined the Indian Army after completing a four-year training program at the Army Sports Institute in Pune. Currently ranked 15th in the world, he secured his spot for the Paris Olympics 2024 in Bangkok and won a bronze medal at the World Cup 2024 in Antalya, Turkey, as part of his preparation for the event.
In 2023, Dhiraj, along with Atanu Das and Tushar Shelke, represented the Indian men's team at the Asian Games, where they clinched the silver medal after losing to the Republic of Korea in the final.

Dhiraj's international debut came in 2017, and his first major success followed in 2021 when he won the gold medal at the World Archer Youth Championships.
The Indian women's team also had a strong showing in the ranking round, finishing fourth and securing a spot in the quarterfinals at Les Invalides in Paris on Thursday. They will face the winner of the last-16 stage match between hosts France and the Netherlands.
Individually, Ankita Bhakat finished 11th with a season-best score of 666, including 30 tens and 9 Xs. Bhajan Kaur scored 659 to finish 22nd, while Deepika Kumari, competing in her fourth Olympics, settled for 23rd place with 658 points.
