Vermeer was exceptional when it came to adding a sense of natural light to his paintings. Be it the light that appeared to be a sudden flash in ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’, or natural light that seemed to come out of windows in ‘The Milkmaid’.

His paintings were majoritarily bustling with activity, full of people all around, and showed winter or spring or autumn landscapes.

And even his portraits were not people standing or sitting at a place waiting to be framed on a canvas, they were natural, candid, and bursting with joy. Hals’s characters were full of life and energy, and that is what made him distinct from others.
