Fans of the Frozen franchise are eagerly awaiting the next adventure of Elsa, Anna, and Olaf. This anticipation has grown even more following the impressive box-office success of Pixar’s Inside Out 2, which has outperformed Frozen 2 and is on its way to becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time. The first part had released in 2013 while the sequel arrived in 2019.
Disney has announced that Frozen 3 is scheduled for release in 2026.
This news was shared by Disney CEO Bob Iger during a company earnings call on February 8, 2024. Although the film was officially announced in February 2023, specific details about its exact release date remain scarce. Given the six-year gap between the releases of Frozen and Frozen 2, fans should prepare for a similar wait for the third installment.
The film is currently in production, and Jennifer Lee, who co-directed the first two movies, has expressed her enthusiasm about its progress. Although she will not be directing Frozen 3, Lee is still involved in the project and is excited about its direction. In October 2023, she shared that she is thrilled about the film, even though she is unsure of her specific role in its production.
The core cast from the previous films is expected to return for Frozen 3. Kristen Bell will reprise her role as Anna, Idina Menzel will return as Elsa, Josh Gad will be back as Olaf, and Jonathan Groff will once again voice Kristoff. While Disney has not yet confirmed the full cast officially, Menzel hinted at their return in June 2023, though she had not seen the script yet.
Other likely returning cast members include Sterling K. Brown as Mattias, Jason Ritter as Ryder, Rachel Matthews as Honeymaren, and Ciarán Hinds as Pabbie. There might also be appearances by Evan Rachel Wood and Alfred Molina, who voiced Anna and Elsa’s parents in flashbacks during Frozen 2.
The plot details for Frozen 3 are still under wraps, but the ending of Frozen 2 offers some clues about possible directions for the story. In the sequel, Anna and Elsa discovered their family’s history, learning that their mother was from the Northuldra tribe and that their grandfather’s actions had caused a historical conflict. With Elsa becoming the 'fifth spirit,' bridging the magical and human worlds, and Anna ascending as Queen of Arendelle, their stories seemed to have reached a natural conclusion.
However, Josh Gad has previously stated that any new installment would need a compelling reason to exist. He remarked that while he does not know if or when there will be a Frozen 3, if there is a story worth telling, Jennifer Lee and the talented team at Disney Animation will likely tell it.
As of now, there is no footage or trailer available for Frozen 3. Fans will need to be patient for any visual teasers or further details as Disney continues to develop the film.
