Recent renovations have deteriorated rapidly in Chandni Chowk area with overflowing litter bins, garbage on shop fronts, broken tiles, and cables hanging over the road. Issues include broken bollards and a central verge now housing street people.

The PWD and MCD are clashing over cleaning duties after the maintenance contract ended on Sept 7. PWD says housekeeping is not its responsibility and lacks the budget.

PWD has stated that while it maintains some facilities, MCD should take over sanitation responsibilities as per statutory provisions. MCD has yet to update its position on taking responsibility for cleaning and sweeping.

The Delhi high court had previously instructed the state government and MCD to maintain the area’s revitalized condition. Despite these directions, no closure report has been submitted, and responsibilities for upkeep remain unresolved.

Traders are distressed by the area’s decline, and both PWD and MCD have failed to implement standard operating procedures for maintenance. The area still suffers from damaged tiles, poorly maintained central verges, and unmanned boom barriers that should restrict vehicle access.

Restrictions on vehicle movement from 9am to 9pm are not being enforced effectively; loading and unloading still occur during restricted hours. A shortage of civil defence volunteers (only 124 out of 400) has exacerbated enforcement problems.

Planned features such as a scramble crossing at the Red Fort traffic intersection have not been implemented. Instead, metal grilles have been installed, forcing pedestrians to use an underpass and raising concerns about accessibility.
